Answer first

A safety audit checklist is a structured list of conditions and practices that an inspector verifies during a workplace walk-through, with space to record findings, corrective actions and a score. These free, printable checklists cover OSHA-aligned general workplace safety, manufacturing floors and oil and gas sites, and each references the relevant standards.

Download and print these checklists, adapt them to your site, or import them into Check-It to score inspections, compare sites and track corrective actions. Each includes header fields, Yes/No/N-A columns, a notes and corrective-action column and a simple scoring formula.

How to run an effective safety inspection

  1. Prepare. Choose the checklist for the area, review previous findings and open corrective actions, and bring PPE required for the area.
  2. Walk the area with the people who work there. Operators and supervisors notice issues an outside inspector may miss.
  3. Record facts, not opinions. Note location, condition and, where possible, a photo.
  4. Fix what you can immediately. Stop work for imminent hazards and record the action taken.
  5. Assign corrective actions. Every "No" needs an owner and a due date.
  6. Score and trend. Compare scores over time and across areas to find repeat issues.
  7. Close the loop. Verify corrective actions at the next inspection.

Who these checklists are for

The checklists are written for supervisors, safety coordinators, plant and site managers, and HSE professionals who need a practical starting point. They are deliberately concise so they can be completed during a normal walk-through. Larger organizations typically adapt them into a standard template per site type, then run them in Check-It so results can be compared across locations and over time.

More templates in Check-It

Check-It Launch Bundles include starter assessments for job safety analysis, OSHA reportables, PPE, food safety, data center migration, NIST, CMMC, business continuity planning, environmental site surveys and boring/drilling. See how Check-It supports manufacturing and oil & gas audit programs.

Frequently asked questions

What is a safety audit checklist?

A safety audit checklist is a structured list of conditions and practices an inspector verifies during a workplace walk-through, such as exits, PPE, machine guarding and chemical labeling, with space to record findings and corrective actions.

What is the difference between a safety inspection and a safety audit?

An inspection checks physical conditions and practices at a point in time. An audit is broader: it evaluates whether the safety program, procedures, training and records are in place and working. Checklists support both.

Are these checklists free to use?

Yes. Print them, copy them and adapt them for use within your organization.

Are the checklists OSHA compliant?

They are aligned to commonly applicable OSHA requirements and reference the relevant standards, but no checklist guarantees compliance. Always verify the current regulations that apply to your site.

Can I run these checklists digitally?

Yes. Import them into Check-It to add scoring, assign them across sites, see results in dashboards and track corrective actions.

Stop consolidating paper checklists. Run them in Check-It with scoring and corrective-action tracking. See pricing or call +1 833-339-6836.
